high school!
just this
ESSENCE OF WRITING:COLLEGE STUDENTS
As what I have learned in English 1,
(Study and thinking skills), writing is the method of presenting language in a
visual way, with a well-mannered organization of thoughts, and it is one of the
four (4) macro skills. Early people even from the Stone Age have their own
form. Writing can be traced from the creation of the first form of alphabet,
the Sumerian cuneiform, up to the present. It is not unknown to our knowledge
that writing is one of the most essential skills that a person should have,
more specifically a college student, because it is some kind of what we call a
“necessity” throughout your studying life. But what really is the importance of
writing to college students?
In college, writing serves as the
plate for our food of knowledge. From simple jotting out of daily discussion
notes to assignments, exams and projects like research and reaction papers, to
Thesis, name it, and writing is always there. For a student, the skills in
writing could be his edge over other people who does not really enjoy or excel
in written activities. Examinations which are usually in written form are one
of the reasons why students who do extremely well in writing carries an edge
among others, mainly because he can express himself and his learning through
writing and can find ease in answering, resulting to better grades. Aside from
examinations, essays and paragraph writing tasks at school can be a piece of
cake for them and if you are good at writing, analyzing problem solving
questions in other subjects like math and science will also be just like a
simple walk in the park. Writing promotes self-confidence, because if you know
how to write effectively it assures you that everyone who will read what you
have done can understand you properly. Activities such as persuading your
teacher that you are sick as the reason for your absence is one of the little
things why writing is important to college students, you may also include
promissory notes. Through writing you can exhibit your intellectual capacity as
a student and can help you tag along with certain academically related questions
and problems easily.
Compared to other macro skills like
listening, reading and speaking, writing can somehow be a burden to students, it
is usually quoted as boring and mind boggling, besides from the reasons like it
takes tons of brain effort and is stressful; it is truly hard to express
something in a written form as compared to just saying it verbally. When you
are asked to write using foreign languages like for example English, instead of
writing using your mother tongue or language 1, it is tough and sometimes it
brings a certain type of self-consciousness, worrying that you may commit
something wrong that may cause your embarrassment. Your satisfaction with your
work sometimes aren’t meet, most probably resulting to several tries and
rewriting, which is truly stressful.Errors in spelling and grammar can be some
of the factors but as a college student, it is a must to learn and be excellent
inthis art because it will truly be beneficial. Writing comes in two forms, the
academic and creative writing so in whatever course you take in college the
need for writing activities will surely chase you, and it is a requirement as I
may call it. Even if you take law, medicine, engineering, accountancy, mass
communication, education or even those computer related courses you can’t slip
away from thesewritten works. Those people who are good at mathematics also has
to excel in writing because mathematics isn’t just concerned with calculations,
but it also involves things like problem solving and statistics which, as we
all know, are usually in written form.
Personally, as a college student and
as a person who can somehow write in a way that I can say well, writing really
gives me some advantages at school. In everyday activities like taking down
notes during lectures, answering questions in quizzes and up to writing reports,
I consider it stress-free, sometimes relaxing and I find it as my comfort zone
in studying. In my experience a vast majority of college students in my class
doesn’t like essays in exams or those “answer briefly” types of questions,
according to them, it is not fun to do and adds up to the weight of the
difficulty in an exam. Frankly I don’t get them but maybe it’s because they
haven’t seen the essentiality of writing yet.
The importance of writing does not end
within the boundaries of college life or while you are still studying, it is
also a dynamic key for you to be able to participate actively in the society.
It is essential in finding a job and in keeping ideas, and it makes your
thoughts visible. So while you are still studying the chances of you in
excelling, enjoying and appreciating the importance of writing is never too
late. In a society where we live in, speaking is not always the key to be noticed;
sometimes you have to use the power of written words to make a statement, to
make something out of nothing. Through this, you can expose things that you
have noticed in the society, within the community you are moving and even the
things that other people do.
College students nowadays should
always consider the significance of writing in their studies and in their
future lives. It is not just a simple school task but it enables you to express
your thoughts in times when you can’t speak out for yourself, writing can help
you preserve your ideas and makes a person of intellectual wealth with tangible
concepts out of you. It is not merely an art but a way of life that plays a
vital role within your personality and your view to the world. It is broadly different
from the other macro skills, it is more complex and the complexity of it is
what makes it beautiful and important.
What’s with the chaos?
Things won’t
always go with the way you want them to be.
Have you ever
noticed the news every morning? How about the issues on the newspaper? Or even
the things that other people talks about every now and then? Well, me, I’m sick
and tired of it all. Kundipatayan,
saksakan, kundisaksakan, holdapan, kundipangungurakot, sakitngpulitiko, meron
pang lovelifengkungsinosinongtao, anongkasunod? Massacre
nanamansaMaguindanao?
Casualtiesngbagongbagyo? Hazing victim? Nawawalangmga journalists?Mga
videos sa CCTV camera nanagpapakitangkawalangdisiplinangmgatao? Pagtaasnggasolinatuwing
Tuesday?Giyerasaibangbansa? Pag-agawsateritoryong may teritoryo? O mgaepalnataosamga tarpaulin?
Come on?!
What’s with all the chaos? Is this some kind of an action movie or a superhero
TV show with a bunch of antagonists and conflicts? Can’t we just live in a
peaceful society? Or a more CHILD FRIENDLY SOCIETY?
Our national
hero ones said “AngKabataanangPag-asang Bayan.” And now I’m asking, how can we
be the hope of our future and of our nation if all the things we see are in
complete disaster?
One morning I
was watching a show while eating my breakfast, and guess what?! The news was
about a woman forced to abort her baby. What followed it was a news about an
accident on the road, a salvage victim, and of course the typical hold-up. I
exclaimed “Gandangpambungadsaumaga!” that incident gave me a really sudden
realization about the situation not just of our country but the situation of
the world and things that might happen in the near future.
I fear for the
lives of my future children, my grandchildren and the future generations that
might experience a hostile, dangerous and chaotic society.
Isn’t it that
for you to be able to help someone you should be able to help yourself first,
be productive and set something up for yourself? The question is how? Your homes
and your schools aren’t enough, YES they affect you primarily, but how about
those indirect institutions that affects you, like the mass media? How can you
filter and just choose the things that you will absorb, if even you, can’t
distinguish right from wrong? From all the events we encounter, it’s hard to
say that you are in the right path.
Time passes,
it’s just like in a blink of an eye you are elementary, then another, you are
in high school, the next thing you know, you are in college, and then suddenly
you have your own family. Unknowingly you are aging along with the changes of
the world you are in, along with disarray. You are moving quickly in the
timeline like an F1 racer trying to get to the finish line. So while you still
have enough gasoline, take the opportunity to shift gears.
